The European Union (EU) has applauded the outcomes of the 28th Indian Ocean Tuna Commission (IOTC) meeting, where eleven new conservation and management measures were implemented to enhance the sustainability of Indian Ocean fisheries. This includes a landmark resolution for the management of drifting fish aggregating devices (dFADs), proposed by the EU. Despite the EU's proposal for a temporary fishing closure in the Indian Ocean to aid yellowfin and bigeye tuna stock recovery not being adopted, the EU's initiatives are credited with establishing the most stringent dFAD management framework in any ocean. The IOTC, which includes the EU and 22 other nations, is dedicated to conserving and managing tuna and tuna-like species in the Indian Ocean.
