In May, Turkey experienced a significant boost in cherry exports to Germany, with a 479 percent increase compared to the same period last year, reaching a value of 17 million 371 thousand dollars. This surge is largely attributed to the anticipated EURO 2024 event. Turkey, known for its world-leading cherry production across regions such as Izmir, Manisa, Bursa, and Amasya, has Germany as a key market for its cherry exports. Manisa, famous for being the first region to harvest cherries in the Northern Hemisphere, contributes significantly to this surge, despite being the smallest producer. The cherry harvest season in Manisa runs from April 15 to August, with the early crop from Şehzadeler region being the main export. The majority of these cherries are exported to Germany, highlighting the impact of the football championship on fruit exports.
