The pandemic has led to a surge in demand for fish, making it the top choice for foods believed to boost immunity. As a result, the fishing industry has experienced significant growth, with Turkey's fishery exports expected to reach $1.5 billion this year, marking a 50% increase from the previous year. The most popular exports include bream, perch, anchovies, octopus, cuttlefish, and calamari, primarily to the European Union. Mehmet Şahin Çakan, a key figure in the Izmir Fisheries Businessmen Association, attributes this growth to both the high quality of fish from Turkish waters and a shift in eating habits towards healthier options prompted by the pandemic.
