A study published in Biodiversity and Conservation researched the feeding habits of the European bison, red deer, and fallow deer in Mediterranean forests, with the findings being the first of their kind. Conducted at the El Encinarejo farm in the Sierra de Andújar, the study used fecal samples collected seasonally in 2021 to analyze the animals' diets through a microhistological technique. The results indicate significant dietary differences across species and seasons, with the European bison showing an extensive consumption of mastic in all seasons, highlighting it as a crucial food source. The research concludes by emphasizing the importance of conserving biodiversity and focusing on the ecosystemic functions of species rather than their origin, underscoring the need for effective conservation strategies.
