European Commission approves Subsidy Scheme for Dairy Farming Expansion (Sem)

The European Commission has approved the SubsidieRegeling Extensivering Melkveehouderij (SEM). This is an important step for dairy farmers seeking a perspective within the current agricultural challenge. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, Fisheries and Nature Management (LVVN) announced this today to the Second Chamber. LVVN will soon publish the scheme in the Staatscourant. The scheme will be opened on June 1, 2026. The LVVN Ministry has made €627 million available for the scheme. The SEM aims to reduce ammonia and greenhouse gas emissions. Additionally, manure production will decrease, which is expected to reduce pressure on the manure market. The scheme is specifically for dairy farmers who want to continue milking but are in trouble.
