The European Commission wants to extend the derogation on the nitrate directive for Ireland by three years. This was reported by Irish Minister of Agriculture Martin Heydon to the Irish parliament following discussions with Swedish European Commissioner for the Environment Jessika Roswall. Additional regulations a condition The granting of the Irish derogation still needs to be formally approved by the member states in the European Nitrate Committee, which will meet on December 9. To maintain the derogation, Irish livestock farmers will have to deal with additional regulations. For example, environmental assessments must be carried out to demonstrate full compliance with the Habitats Directive. The minister also calls on the sector to continue working on demonstrable improvements in water quality.
