Ivasi has become the second most widely caught fish species in Russia, following pollock, accounting for about 30% of the total catch and meeting domestic demand for various products. There is also a high demand for ivasi in international markets for the production of fishmeal and fat, particularly for aquaculture feed. Despite increased production costs, the price for frozen ivasi sardines on the Russian market remains stable. The All-Russian Association of Fishery Industrialists (VARPE) anticipates a significant increase in ivasi supplies by 2030. Additionally, herring, which was previously replaced by ivasi in Soviet times due to shortages, is now more abundant in Russian waters and is prioritized for the domestic market.
