Açaí, a product from the Amazon region, has seen global popularity for its health benefits, leading to a significant increase in demand. Brazil, particularly the state of Pará, is the largest producer and exporter of açaí, which has surged by over 14,380% in the last decade. However, supply challenges, including harvest decreases during off-seasons and high demand, have led to a scarcity and high price in the local market. Despite production growth, the demand, both domestically and internationally, continues to outstrip supply, causing an açaí crisis. This situation, however, has also improved the livelihoods of riverside communities by making it more profitable to keep the açaí trees standing, thereby reducing deforestation.
