Tilapia is one of the items showing strong growth in seafood exports. Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Hang, a catfish market expert from the Vietnam Association of Seafood Processing and Export (VASEP), stated that in the first eight months of this year, tilapia exports, including red tilapia, reached over 63 million USD, an increase of 174% compared to the same period last year. This figure surpasses Vietnam's tilapia export value over the past five years (from 2020-2024). In the past eight months, tilapia exports grew to three digits, reaching 52 million USD, an increase of 359% compared to the same period last year. Meanwhile, red tilapia exports decreased by 1% and reached 11 million USD. In the past eight months, the U.S. has been the largest market for Vietnamese tilapia, accounting for 62% of the total tilapia export value.
