Despite the challenging dry and low-rain spring in 2021, similar to the previous year, and the COVID-19 pandemic's impact on tourism and hospitality, Bulgaria's agricultural foreign trade experienced a 2.3% increase in food business exports, hitting a record high. This growth was seen across all categories, with plant product exports surging by 8.7% and food products, beverages, and tobacco increasing by 4.6%. The export of animal and vegetable fats and oils also saw growth. The improvement in the agricultural export surplus, which reached 3.2 billion euros, was a significant contribution to the national economy, accounting for about half of its foreign trade balance. The article highlights the resilience of the food trade despite the pandemic and Brexit challenges, noting that consumer habits and food consumption have not significantly changed, with e-commerce and home delivery of unprocessed agricultural products on the rise.
