In Long An province, Vietnam, farmer Mr. Nguyen Van Cuong and Mr. Nguyen Van Phuong are among many local farmers who have abandoned Thai jackfruit cultivation in favor of durian, a crop known for its high profit potential but high upfront costs and long growth period. The switch is due to the lower prices and expanding market for durian, compared to the saturated market and low prices for jackfruit. However, the Vietnam Fruit and Vegetable Association requires durian growers to have a planting area and packing facility code for export to China, and the durian tree takes eight years to bear stable fruit. To support farmers in converting to durian cultivation, Farmers' Associations are providing propaganda, training, and technique transfer. The Sub-department for Agro-Forestry-Fisheries Quality Management in Long An province has been accepted into China's durian export market with two area codes, covering 25 hectares in Tan Lap commune.
