The National Federation of Olive Growers Cooperatives shows concern about the future of traditional olive groves in Portugal

FENAZEITES – National Federation of Olive Growers Cooperatives – was concerned about the future of traditional olive groves in Portugal and called for an urgent analysis of the market reality. The Federation added that it is necessary to “understand what the availability of the product is and be able to make profitable use of olive oil from traditional olive groves”, since, in recent years, periods with high temperatures and extreme droughts have contributed to the decrease in its production. FENAZEITES further explained that, during this campaign, the Galician olive, the main national variety, “was decimated by gafa and ended up falling, preventing its harvest”. Furthermore, it is also explained that the downward trend in olive oil prices to values below production costs, combined with climate change, “will lead, in the short term, to the abandonment of large areas of olive groves”.
