Fish farmers have released over 338 million larvae of the Baikal omul and 866 thousand juveniles of the Siberian sturgeon into Lake Baikal, as part of a state task and federal program aimed at ecological restoration and compensation for business-related damage. Over the past three years, over 2.13 billion Baikal omul larvae have been released, surpassing the federal project's goals. The release of sturgeon juveniles also exceeds the project's targets, with a record 1 billion released in 2022. The Bolsherechensky fish hatchery has also seen a significant amount of omul caviar laid for incubation, using a method that allows for the majority of the fish to remain alive and be released back into the lake.
