Farmers in the North West region have expressed optimism following good rainfall this season, but are still in need of more for optimal crop growth. Despite a late start to the rainy season and heat wave conditions, maize was successfully planted. The National Crop Estimates Committee predicts a slight decrease in maize plantings for 2024, with an estimated 540,000ha, down from the previous season. However, the final production estimate for 2023 is a substantial 16.395 million tonnes, with the North West's expected contribution being 2.778 million tonnes.
