Ten farms in Cheongju and Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungcheongbuk-do province in South Korea have been confirmed to have foot-and-mouth disease, marking the first outbreak since January 2019. The disease has spread to about 1,200 cattle and goats, prompting quarantine authorities to cull all animals on the affected farms and implement emergency vaccinations in all farms raising large animals in the province. The effectiveness of these vaccinations is under investigation following concerns about improper storage or administration. The source of the outbreak is not yet clear, but it is believed to be related to a strain of the virus circulating in Southeast Asia. The authorities are considering expanding the vaccination campaign and advising strict quarantine measures.
