The French government has published the list of fruits and vegetables that may continue to be marketed with plastic containers, according to a decree published on Wednesday, June 21, 2023. The list includes 29 species, among which are: lettuce, asparagus, broccoli, early potatoes, early carrots and cherries, lamb's lettuce, endives, mushrooms, spinach, raspberries, strawberries or blueberries, cherries, currants and sprouted seeds. The exemption is granted for the "risk of spoilage" if these products are sold in bulk. In addition, all fruits and vegetables that are not exempt are also granted a period, until December 31, 2023, to allow the disposal of packaging stocks. A French decree of October 2021, which entered into force on January 1, 2022, stated that many unprocessed fresh fruits and vegetables, in plastic containers, could no longer be sold in France, unless they were containers of more than 1, 5 kg.
