The United Kingdom has conducted its annual safety assessment of imported seafood as part of Operation Opson XI, focusing on detecting illegal food and drink. The Suffolk Coastal Port Health Authority (SCPHA) inspected over 400 items, including seafood and alcohol, finding an undeclared sword squid mixed with Indian Ocean squid and raising concerns about potential food fraud. The operation, led by Interpol and Europol, also highlighted concerns about undeclared water additions and prohibited additives in seafood products. Similar investigations have been conducted in Norway, where traces of nitrite were found in smoked salmon, raising questions about intentional or fraudulent use of preservatives.
