(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Seong Hye-mi and Kim Yun-gu = French beef is entering the domestic market for the first time in 24 years since the import ban in 2000.

Imports of European beef have been suspended since 2000 due to the outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).

In order to re-import beef from a country where mad cow disease has occurred, the National Assembly must review the import hygiene conditions. Following the passage of the French and Irish beef import hygiene conditions bill in the National Assembly late last year, the path to import has been completely opened as the remaining negotiations, including approval of slaughterhouses, were finalized in June.

The French Embassy in Korea held a press conference on the 4th to promote the resumption of French beef imports.

The French Livestock Association and beef exporters will also hold business consultations with domestic department stores, marts, and other companies on this day. This is a move to fully explore the Korean market.

For this event, 70 kg of French beef was imported into Korea for the first time since the import ban.

French Ambassador to Korea Philippe Berthoud said, “French beef has arrived in Korea,” adding, “It is something we have been waiting for, and it is the result of a long-awaited agreement between the leaders of the two countries.”

France is the largest beef producer in the European Union (EU). It produces 1.36 million tons of beef annually, which is far behind Germany (980,000 tons), Italy (75 tons), and Spain (730,000 tons).

129,000 livestock farms raise 17 million animals, including 10 million beef cattle and 7 million dairy cows.

The cattle are raised by grazing on pastures, and 85% of the feed is produced directly by the farms.

Claudine Girardeau, Deputy Commissioner for Economic Affairs and Trade at the French Embassy in Seoul, said that they do not use any hormones or antibiotics to promote livestock growth.

He explained, "Six slaughterhouses in France are producing beef for export with Korean approval," and "We have been inspected twice by the Korean Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, and we have all been notified that export is possible."

He continued, "We can only export to Korea if we are judged not to be at risk for mad cow disease and lumpy skin disease," adding, "We only export boneless meat from cattle under 30 months old."
