The Chinese General Administration of Customs has announced new regulations for Egyptian pomegranate exports to China, requiring cold treatment, specific grading, and cleaning procedures, and the registration of facilities with the Central Plant Quarantine Administration. The pomegranates must be stored at certain temperatures for a specific period to prevent certain pests. Inspectments will be conducted to ensure compliance. Despite the new regulations, Egyptian pomegranate exports, which reached 247,000 metric tons last season, are expected to remain steady. China has recently also opened its market to various other tropical fruits from other countries.
