Spain: Frosts leave Catalonia with practically no almond harvest

The frosts at the beginning of April in nuts, especially almonds and walnuts, have affected some 30,000 hectares of the 35,074 almond orchards. The frosts, which could be considered the worst in many years, have caused a loss of the almond harvest that will be close to 90% with a drop in production of more than 23,000 tons. This represents an economic loss of 19.4 million. The losses focus especially on the regions of Lleida, the interior of the Ebro and Central Catalonia. El Segrià is expected to be the region with the largest loss (6.4 million), followed by Terra Alta (3.2 million) and Les Garrides (3 million). In total 13.4 million losses in Lleida; 4.6 in Terres de l'Ebre, 1.3 in Camp de Tarragona and 0.1 in Anoia. The 541 hectares cultivated with walnut have also suffered very serious damage, estimating a drop in production of 59% worth 4.2 million.
