The Jaíba Region in Minas Gerais, Brazil, has received the Geographical Indication (IG) for the production of banana, mango, papaya, and Tahiti acid lime, becoming the first fruit growing segment in the state to receive this recognition. This will benefit around 2,500 fruit growers who produce over 450,000 tons of fruit per year, and will open up new markets, adding value to the products, and strengthening the production chain. The region has been supported by Sebrae Minas for the past 20 years, and the fruit industry here exports 40% of the country's lemons, 10% of the mangoes, and 1% of the bananas and papayas. The IG, the first of its kind in Minas Gerais, is expected to significantly boost the value of the region's products and create more job opportunities.
