(Gangneung=Yonhap News) Reporter Yoo Hyeong-jae = Gangneung City in Gangwon Province is pushing to establish a four-season production system for potatoes, a representative crop in the province.
Gangneung City was finally selected for the "2026 Technology Dissemination Blending Cooperation Model Pilot Project" led by the Rural Development Administration and will actively promote the high-income crop cultivation of local agricultural products through cooperation between academia, industry, and research institutes, as announced on the 30th.
A total of 1 billion won will be invested in this project over the next two years starting next year.
Gangneung City is pushing to establish a high-income crop cultivation system for its well-evaluated four-season potato production system.
The main content of the project is to introduce new autumn and winter cultivation models centered on potatoes optimized for the climate of the East Sea coastal area, moving away from the current focus on spring potato cultivation.
The core goal is to establish a year-round potato production system for spring, autumn, and winter and to cultivate it as a high-income crop for all four seasons.
The Gangneung Agricultural Technology Center plans to establish a successful model through a cooperation system between local farmers and related institutions, including the development and dissemination of farming-utilization technology, operation of training centers, and development of manuals for new technology development and dissemination.
Mayor Kim Hong-gyu said, "I expect this project selection to be a major turning point for the development of local agriculture" and "In the future, we will do our best to increase farmers' income by establishing a systematic technology support and cooperation system."
