Record heavy rains in Gangwon province have caused significant damage to ginseng farms, with 58.7 square kilometers of fields buried, locked, or lost in 93 farms across eight cities and counties. The Gangwon Ginseng Cooperative Association has declared it as wider than the combined area of 80 soccer fields. The damage is due to excessive rainfall and subsequent root rot disease, especially in farms with poor soil drainage or lack of sun protection facilities. The Gangwon-do Agricultural Technology Institute urges farmers to drain the fields, clean the crops, and immediately harvest young roots affected by flooding for more than six hours. They also recommend farmers to apply drugs to control various pests such as spotty disease and anthrax.
