Between January and July of 2024, Germany experienced a notable increase in pig imports, with a total of approximately 6.9 million pigs brought in, marking an 8.1% increase compared to the same period in the previous year. This surge is primarily attributed to a higher import of pigs from Denmark, which saw a 17.5% rise in pig deliveries, while imports from the Netherlands experienced a 6.4% decrease. The rise in trade with Denmark is largely due to Denmark's lower piglet prices, leading Danish farmers to prioritize exports over fattening pigs domestically. Conversely, German fattening pig producers experienced improved income prospects due to a reduced number of German sows, addressing a long-standing piglet shortage in German pig farms. Despite these positive trends, imports of slaughter pigs to Germany slightly declined by 2.1% compared to the previous year, with the majority of these pigs coming from the Netherlands and Belgium.
