In the 2021/2022 season, Germany's grain consumption saw a decrease of nearly 4 million tons, totaling around 39 million tons, primarily due to a drop in grain use for animal feed by 16 percent. This decrease was attributed to lower compound feed production and increased feed component costs. Despite lower yields, German agriculture managed to meet domestic demand by providing enough grain and cereal products, achieving a self-sufficiency rate of 109 percent. This was supported by increased production for food and industrial use, as well as efforts to support countries like Ukraine affected by the war.
