In the 2021/22 marketing year, German rapeseed oil exports saw a decline of 22%, totaling 1.1 million tons, following three years of increasing growth. Despite the drop, the volume was still 13% higher than the 2019/20 season. The Netherlands emerged as the largest recipient, followed by Belgium, France, Denmark, and Poland. This shift is largely due to increased domestic demand for biodiesel processing. As biodiesel plays a crucial role in the colder northern European countries, particularly in the winter, and given the potential impact of war and climate change on supply, there is a call to boost sunflower cultivation in 2023 for both biodiversity and crop rotation diversity beyond canola, offering potential to bolster the region's raw material base for the biofuel industry.
