In 2020, German farms harvested approximately 3.9 million tonnes of vegetables, maintaining the same yield as the previous year. Despite a 7% decrease in the number of vegetable farms since 2016, the field cultivation area remained stable. The largest areas for field vegetable cultivation were in North Rhine-Westphalia, Lower Saxony, and Rhineland-Palatinate. Organic farming accounted for 10% of the total field harvest, showing a nearly 16% increase from 2019. Asparagus, carrots, and onions were the most widely cultivated crops. While the overall vegetable harvest remained stable, there were changes in the cultivation and yield of certain vegetables like cauliflower, kale, and Chinese cabbage. Greenhouse cultivation also saw minimal changes, with tomatoes, cucumbers, and lamb's lettuce being the main crops.
