On September 30, the suspicion of avian influenza on a poultry farm was officially confirmed in the Surwold commune in Emsland County (Lower Saxony). About 700 geese, about 750 ducks and about 600 broilers were infected with the highly pathogenic H5N1 influenza virus. The animals are killed and the county makes a general ordinance containing preventive measures to prevent the spread of the virus. Again, the protection measures include the creation of a protection zone of approximately 3 km around the site where the explosion occurred and a surveillance zone of a radius of 10 km around the site of the explosion. There are seven commercial plants in the protection zone with over 190,000 sq m. poultry and 23 hobby farms with 415 birds.
