Egypt has set the purchase price for local wheat at 2250–2350 Egyptian pounds (46.4–48.5 US dollars) per ardeb (150 kilograms) for the 2025/2026 season, according to a statement from the cabinet on Wednesday. The new price is approximately 7% higher than the previous season, which ended in mid-August, during which prices ranged from 2100 to 2200 Egyptian pounds. The statement said that this increase is intended to "respond to current economic changes" in line with "the political leadership's vision to strengthen aspects of food security and reduce dependence on imports." Egypt, which is often the world's largest importer of wheat, requires more than 8 million tons of wheat per year to produce subsidized bread for more than 70 million citizens, according to Reuters.
