In 2020, the global demand for ginger, particularly due to the pandemic-induced trend of home cooking, led to a significant increase in its consumption. China, being the world's largest exporter, saw a 50,000-ton increase in its ginger exports, totaling about 575,000 tons. The majority of these exports were directed towards Southeast Asian countries and Europe, with the Netherlands serving as a key transit point for the EU market. However, China's ginger faced competition in the US market from Peru and Brazil, both of which experienced increases in their ginger exports. Additionally, ginger from Anqiu, Shandong, China, was exported to New Zealand for the first time in February 2020, expanding its reach into Oceania.
