The start of the South African summer rainy season and cooler weather have led to a decrease in the supply of potatoes, onions, tomatoes, and bananas, resulting in higher prices on the wholesale markets. The price of potatoes is at € 4.17 / 10 kg, and there is concern about consumer opposition to this price level. Sweet potato prices have seen the most significant increase, rising 168% compared to the same period last year. The expected continued rain and cooler weather are likely to keep vegetable prices high for the rest of the month. Mango growers, however, report the best bloom ever due to the cold weather, with some areas expecting a record crop if they receive enough heat. Parts of Letaba, a district where avocados, subtropical fruit, and citrus are grown, have seen beneficial spring rainfall.
