The Indian government is taking urgent steps to address a significant 42.18% increase in vegetable prices, particularly due to a sharp rise in onion prices, as highlighted by the October CPI inflation data. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare emphasized efforts to stabilize retail onion prices, including the introduction of bulk onion transportation via special trains, the 'Kanda Express.' This initiative has already delivered onions to several cities, contributing to price stabilization. The government's goal is to lower retail onion prices to around Rs. 35 per kilogram. The surge in vegetable prices, especially onions, has led to inflation rates exceeding the Reserve Bank of India's target, although inflation excluding vegetables remains low at 3.6%. The government remains committed to using targeted interventions to mitigate the impact on consumers and reduce inflationary pressures.
