The Indian government has imposed a 10% import duty on lentils and extended the duty-free import of yellow peas until May 31, 2025. The move is aimed at enhancing the domestic availability of these pulses. The basic customs duty and Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess on lentils will be 5% each, effective from March 8, 2025. In 2024, India's yellow peas import was estimated at 30 lakh tonnes, which was part of the overall pulses import of 67 lakh tonnes.
