The Indian government has started selling onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg in Delhi-NCR and Mumbai to counteract the high prices, which are currently over Rs 60 per kg. Managed by NCCF and NAFED, a buffer stock of 4.7 lakh tonnes of onions will be sold through retail points and mobile vans. The initiative will expand to other major cities in the second phase, with a nationwide sale planned for later in September. These measures aim to control food inflation, and the outlook for onion availability and prices is positive due to increased kharif sowing and existing storage stocks.
