Accelerating the improvement of animal welfare in egg production The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) began the relevant consultations in mid-January. Representatives of the agricultural sector and industry can submit comments on the plans until March 9. The documents related to these consultations also reveal further details regarding the schedule. According to these documents, the construction or first operation of battery cages enriched for laying hens is to be prohibited as early as 2027. This also applies to farms with 350 or fewer laying hens, as well as other cage systems for young and breeding hens.
