Brazil's rice sector experienced a trade deficit of 152.07 thousand tons of paddy rice in the 2024/25 season, a significant shift from the surplus in the previous season. This deficit was largely due to a sharp decrease in paddy rice exports, particularly to Central America and the Caribbean, where US rice is undercutting Brazilian prices. Despite this, there was growth in exports of broken and white rice. Imports of husked and white rice also increased, while imports of husked rice decreased. The future of rice exports hinges on a recovery in domestic demand and efficient flow, with expectations of higher production in Brazil and the Mercosur region due to favorable weather and water conditions.
