A durian farm in Maoming, Guangdong, southern China, has become the country's first to successfully cultivate the fruit on a commercial scale outside of Hainan province, a major breakthrough. The farm, spread over 20 hectares, has been planting durian trees since 2018 and currently hosts around 200,000 young trees. With varieties like Musang King and Black Thorn, it is expecting its first harvest in October. This development comes as China's import of fresh durians continues to grow, reaching 822,000 metric tons and $4.21 billion in 2021. So far, Thailand is the only country authorized to export fresh durians to China, but Vietnam and Cambodia are also seeking market access.
