The price of onions has plummeted, deepening the distress of farmers. The sharp decline in onion prices is analyzed to be due to the government's aggressive TRQ (tariff-rate quota) import volume, favorable crop conditions, and sluggish consumption. This year, early-maturing onion production increased by 9.2% compared to the previous year, and mid to late-maturing onion cultivation areas expanded by 4%, with production yield increasing by 7.5%, resulting in a 3.2% increase in overall production. Consequently, as the volume of shipments increased, wholesale prices have been halved compared to the same period last year. The Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs has proposed measures such as △purchasing and stockpiling △suppressing low-quality onion shipments △delaying shipments of mid-season varieties △providing discounts, but the field remains uneasy.
