Guatemala has declared a national emergency after H5N1 avian influenza was found in pelicans in Portland. The country is strengthening epidemiological surveillance and has a stockpile of 11.7 million and 11.5 million vaccines. Since 2012, Guatemala has prohibited the import of poultry and related by-products from countries affected by highly pathogenic avian influenza. The Minister of Economy will monitor the supply and price of poultry products to prevent speculation and stabilize the market.
