Indonesia marked National Farmers Day on September 24, 2021, to honor farmers but also acknowledged the country's dependence on food imports despite its agricultural nature. Data from the Central Statistics Agency showed an increase in agricultural labor in 2020, but Indonesia still could not satisfy its citizens' basic food needs. Between January and August 2021, the country imported over 15 million tons of basic commodities, valued at US$ 8.37 billion or Rp. 118.9 trillion. These imports included essential food items that could be locally produced, highlighting the gap between local production and demand.
