Since the introduction of heifer centers as part of the National Agriculture Project in 2016, investing nearly 50 million liras in 26 centers, Turkey has failed to see the expected improvements in its livestock sector. Despite the centers' goal of reducing imports, the country continues to bring in heifers from abroad, with 18,533 heifers imported in the first 10 months of 2022, resulting in an expenditure of 37.2 million dollars. These imports, priced between 1500 and 2100 dollars per heifer, contradict the local producers' struggles and highlight the ineffectiveness of existing policies and the need for a reevaluation of Turkey's animal husbandry strategies.
