The North Atlantic Pelagic Advocacy Group (NAPA) has warned that overfishing could lead to a potential collapse of the Atlanto-Scandian herring in the Northeast Atlantic, similar to the 1960s, with the species reaching a critically low reproduction threshold by 2026. Despite warnings from the international fisheries science community and a global coalition of market actors, Coastal State governments have not agreed on sustainable quota sharing arrangements. NAPA is urging these governments to reach an agreement by 2024. Current negotiations are underway regarding quota sharing for the herring, mackerel, and blue whiting, with NAPA stating that this is the last chance for significant change and warning that the market will respond if the governments do not.
