Bangladesh has set a new record in salt production, with a 22% increase from the previous year, reaching 2.232 million tonnes. This is despite challenges from Cyclone Mocha. The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industry Corporation (BSCIC) believes the domestic demand will be met, but concerns about the stability of the salt market have been raised due to high prices and supply management issues. The average production per acre has increased due to prolonged drought conditions and an increase in farmers engaged in salt production. However, traders and mill owners have concerns about the wastage of approximately 15% of the field-level salt and the quality of the salt, with a higher percentage being malnourished this year due to harvesting within a shorter timeframe.
