The European Union's decision to fully liberalize trade with Ukraine, including the removal of all quotas and customs duties on Ukrainian products, has had significant economic implications for European farmers and beekeepers due to an increase in imports of certain foodstuffs. The FNSEA, a French farmers' union, requested and implemented a safeguard mechanism to protect sensitive sectors, including honey, from market disruptions. This mechanism, in effect from June 5, 2024, to June 6, 2025, triggers the reintroduction of customs duties after a certain volume of honey imports from Ukraine is reached. However, the FNSEA acknowledges that this measure does not fully protect French and European beekeepers and is actively seeking a balanced trade agreement with Ukraine for after June 2025.
