The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of Hong Kong's Department of Food and Environmental Hygiene has suspended the importation of meat and poultry products, including chicken eggs, from several areas in South Africa, Canada, and the Netherlands due to outbreaks of H5N1 avian influenza. This decision is aimed at protecting public health in Hong Kong. Despite a recent protocol established with South Africa for importing poultry, no chicken meat was imported from the country to Hong Kong in the first half of this year. Hong Kong also imported limited amounts of frozen chicken meat from Canada and the Netherlands during the same period. The CFS will continue to liaise with the relevant authorities and take necessary actions in response to the ongoing avian influenza situation.
