The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) has reached out to Denmark and other European egg-producing countries, requesting information on their ability and willingness to export eggs to the US. This move comes as a response to record-high wholesale egg prices in the US, caused by bird flu outbreaks that have significantly reduced supplies, with prices of white and graded eggs reaching $8.60 per dozen. The USDA is part of a $1 billion initiative to combat the bird flu impact, including importing eggs to alleviate the shortage. However, potential export restrictions and economic sanctions imposed by the US on Europe due to tariffs and the controversial issue of US control over Greenland could impact the success of this strategy.
