The Solar Ice Maker (SIM) project in Kawa, Indonesia, is a collaboration between the International Pole and Line Foundation (IPNLF), GIZ-Indonesia, and the UNDP's Ocean Innovation Challenge, aiming to revolutionize ice production and boost small-scale fishers' livelihoods. This initiative, which has been supported by the Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, uses solar energy to produce up to one ton of high-quality ice per day, on-demand and off-grid. This not only improves the quality of the fish but also reduces post-harvest losses and the carbon footprint of ice production. The project is part of Indonesia's strategy to promote a Blue Economy, align with global sustainability goals, and support small-scale fishers facing challenges such as limited access to electricity and competition from industrial fisheries.
