The article highlights the significant challenges faced by Hungarian honey producers, with a focus on the negative impact of import competition and counterfeit honey from Asia and Ukraine. These imports have severely threatened the market share of Hungarian honey, leading to a decrease in domestic sales prices. The European Union's open market policy to Ukraine and the growing preference for cheaper honey mixtures due to economic challenges in Europe have further worsened the situation. In response, the National Hungarian Beekeeping Association, along with organizations from 11 other EU countries, has filed an anti-dumping complaint against Chinese honey. To support local beekeepers, Hungary has implemented various sectoral support programs, allocating around HUF 15.6 billion from 2023 to 2027. This includes introducing the first animal welfare support for beekeepers in the EU, with HUF 15,000 per bee colony per year.
