A team of researchers has developed the Antarctic Hydroponic Production Module (MAPHi) to produce leafy greens year-round at Argentine Antarctic bases using hydroponic techniques and artificial lights. The project, which has installed three modules at different bases, aims to improve the quality of life and diet of base personnel by providing fresh produce in the remote, isolated conditions of Antarctica. The modules are monitored in real time from Santa Cruz and use a small area to grow crops on multiple levels. The project involves training local staff in module operation and management, with support from the Antarctic Joint Command and the National Antarctic Directorate.
