The 'Virus-Free Garlic' project in Paraná, Brazil, led by the Institute of Rural Development of Paraná (IDR-Paraná) and Embrapa-Hortaliças, is aimed at providing family farmers with high-quality garlic seeds and advanced multiplying techniques. The project, which operates screens for virus-free seed production in 5 municipalities and has 33 reference units in 24 municipalities, provides technical guidance to producers and focuses on producing genetically superior garlic. The project has produced 900 kilos of garlic seeds, which undergo a vernalization process before planting. The partnership with Embrapa-Hortaliças is set to be renewed for another two years to sustainably restructure the garlic production chain in Paraná and enhance the role of family farmers in this sector.
